Family Strong WV Is Here For You

Join a support group designed exclusively for West Virginians who have a loved one with a substance use problem.

It’s difficult to know where to turn when you have a loved one with a substance use issue. The relationship with the substance user can put a strain on your family, on your resources, and on you. That is why we created Families Strong.

Families Strong WV offers free support groups for the families and friends of individuals with substance use issues. Our program is specifically for West Virginians. Each group is private and limited to 12 members or less. Groups meet either weekly for 1 to 2 hours During group meetings, you will be able to share experiences, learn tools to help you cope, and explore resources to help you and your loved ones.

These meetings are not group therapy. Instead, with facilitation by a group leader, Families Strong WV helps you expand your understanding and coping skills. We encourage you to explore new ways of approaching challenging situations so you can handle whatever comes your way in the future.

Who can join a Families Strong WV group?

Each support group is comprised of your peers—people in West Virginia who have a loved one with substance use issues. When you join a support group, you see the same people at every meeting.

Our small groups allow everyone an opportunity to share in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Many participants find they connect with other group members as they develop coping skills and strategies.

Who leads the groups?

Many Families Strong WV group leaders are people just like you—parents, siblings, spouses, grandparents, friends with a loved one who has a substance use issue. They know how it feels to face the unexpected, the strain on resources, the stigma. They know what it feels like to be at your wit’s end and to make the decision to seek guidance and support.

Group leaders are trained to provide you with information, tools, a comfortable and safe setting, and a compassionate ear.

Why is this program free for me?

The Families Strong WV program is free to West Virginians because of a grant from the West Virginia Bureau for Behavioral Health, with support from the  Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

The Families Strong program is designed by Mosaic Group, nationally recognized experts in community and public health. The Mosaic Group team of behavioral health specialists developed Families Strong using state-of-the-art practices and real-world experience to support families through these challenges, helping them to come out stronger than ever before.
